Upcoming shuttler PV Sindhu became the first Indian to win the Asian U-19 badminton championships when she defeated Japan’s Okuhara Nozomi 18-21 21-17 22-20 in the final in Gimcheon, Korea, on Saturday. The 17-year-old, who hails from Hyderabad and trains alongside Saina Nehwal, had finished runner-up in the event last year in Lucknow. The towering Indian was the top seed in this tournament. She is currently ranked 25th in the world among seniors.
Indian eves lose in Jr Asia Cup hockey final
Bangkok: Indian women settled for silver at the sixth Junior Women’s Asia Cup hockey championship after China beat them 5-2 in the final. India raced to a 2-0 lead after 25 minutes through Deep Grace Ekka and Ritu Rani. Rain then halted play for 10 minutes, after which the Indian girls lost their rhythm. India have qualified for next year’s Junior Women’s World Cup.
