If you ever found yourself in the same room as Hou Yifan, you could mistake her for a chessboard flying all over the place!

This is the illusion the Chinese Grandmaster creates through her 'checkered' style statement. Draped in checkered dresses, ranging from pretty skirts to stylish tops, the 17-year-old manages to grab attention wherever she goes.

In the Capital for a tournament organised by the Airports Authority of India, she admitted to being superstitious.

"Checkered prints bring good luck to me. I try to wear them in any form, be it a skirt or formal dress," said the teenager who was adjudged the best Sportsperson of the Year in China this year.

Born in Xinghua, Yifan's recent feats include winning the Women's World Championship last year.

"Even there, I wore a checkered top for the first few rounds and the result is there to see," she chuckled.

Apart from her dressing, the smile is another permanent feature and the player attributed it to the 'checkered print', "It keeps me happy," she explained.

"From the moment Yifan landed, I've been seeing her in the same checkered print," said Bharat Singh, honorary secretary of the All India Chess Federation.

She is not the lone case.

"There are others who wear the same clothes for the entire duration of a tournament.

"I remember Koneru Humpy wearing a yellow top and a pair of jeans almost everyday during a championship in Chennai sometime back. It's all about belief," he said.
