Eight-time world champion Pankaj Advani and 2012 Asian snooker champion Aditya Mehta are expected to lead the Indian challenge in the Indian Open snooker world ranking tournament, to be held in New Delhi from October 14-18.

The event, which offers a total prize money of pounds 300,000, is open to professional players like Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump, who are expected to vie for top honours.

The five-day event, to be held under the aegis of the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI), will see 64 cueists qualifying via a tournament in England. The BSFI will field six players as per national ranking to make it a 70-man field.

Former world champion Geet Sethi said the event would not only give a fillip to the sport, it would raise the profile of Indian players as well, adding, “it is a big chance for home players to raise their standard and become role models”.
