Members of Parliament will now be able to spend money from their funds for developing sports infrastructure.

The Programme Implementation and Statistics ministry on Friday allowed the convergence of MP Local Area Development Scheme with two sports development infrastructure schemes of the Sports and Youth Affairs ministry. They are Panchyat Yuva Krida Aur Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA) and the Urban Sports Infrastructure Scheme (USIS).

The sports and youth affairs ministry has launched these schemes to promote sports at the village level and localities in cities. But, paucity of funds was said to be the biggest constraint for creating sports infrastructure. With the decision, there could be more fund flow for the sports infrastructure at the local level.

Programme implementation minister Srikant Jena said the convergence betweel MPLAD and these two schemes will help in constructing durable assets. “It will create infrastructure for sports development in the country,” he said.

In rural areas, the money from the MPLAD could be utilized for leveling of playgrounds in hilly areas, construction of boundary wall for the projects approved under PYKKA.

In urban areas, the MPLAD can be used for creation of durable sports assets such as multi-purpose sports halls, athletic tracks, football and hockey turf. However, the money under both the schemes will have to be spent as per the provisions of guidelines on MPLADS and will be monitored by the district MPLAD monitoring cell.
