20-yr-old labourer crushed to death at Pepsi factory

A young labourer was crushed to death at the Channo-based factory of Pepsi Foods Limited in the Bhawanigarh subdivision of the district on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Kala (20), a resident of Gajju Majra of the district.
 
Agitated family members of the deceased  blocked the Bathinda-Chandigarh national highway 64 for three hours, until the management of the company decided to provide a job to the brother of the deceased and monthly pension of Rs 1100 for his mother.

Talking to Hindustan times, Bhawanigarh police station in-charge Sukhminder Singh said: "The incident took place when Gurpreet was unloading a truck and another truck hit him from the back side. He was crushed between two trucks and died on the spot"

Agitated over the death, Gurpreet's family members and villagers blocked the NH 64, demanding compensation for the victim's family and arrest of the driver of the truck, which crushed Grupreet to death.

Sangrur DSP (R) Gurpreet Singh,  Balwant Singh,  human resources manager of the company and Truck Union president Gurtej Singh Jhaneri reached the spot and requested the agitating family members to remove the road blockade.

After an assurance from the HR manager to provide a job to the brother of the deceased and monthly pension to victim's mother,  the family members ended their protest.  The truck union also announced to provide` 1.25 lakh compensation to Gurpreet's family.

Bhawanigarh SHO said that the police have arrested truck driver Kuldeep Singh and filed a case under section  304-A, 279 of the IPC.
