The joy of getting promoted was shortlived for a section of teachers who were recently promoted by the state government.

Around 900 teachers of the education department were promoted as lecturers against non-planned (temporary) posts six months ago, but they were yet to receive their salaries as their posts had not yet been sanctioned by the finance department. These teachers had drawn their last salary in April.

Owing to this, they have not been paid salaries for the past six months.

Though the teachers have sent repeated representations to the authorities at the district and state levels to sanction the posts, the authorities have failed to take note of the problem.

"We will not be able to get salaries unless the government sanctions our posts. The authorities have made us do the rounds of finance and education departments," a teacher said.

Around 3,000 masters of various subjects were promoted as lecturers in May. But the government has sanctioned posts of only those lecturers who are working in schools being run under the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development scheme and those working on demand posts.

Though most of them got their promotion sanctioned from the finance department, around 900 teachers have been ignored.

"It is difficult for us to make ends meet. We are frustrated this festive season as we don't have money," rued a teacher.

These lecturers have repeatedly met education minister Sikander Singh Maluka in the past three months, but his assurances have allegedly not brought results.

Director of public instructions (secondary) Kamal Garg, who deals with promotions of teachers, could not be contacted.
