The 57thdeath-anniversary of Baba Mast Ram was observed on Wednesday as people were seen offering liquor as 'prasad' at Baba Mast Ram Dera in the Jattana Khurd village of Fatehgarh Sahib.
The history of the dera goes back to 50 years and the act of offering alcohol has been in practice ever since. People offer alcohol in the hope that their wishes will come true. Devotees offer alcohol after the fulfillment of their needs. Miraculous cures are believed to happen at the shrine.
A villager pleading anonymity said, "Though the managing committee has prohibited liquor at the dera and the same is written on the wall but people ignore it. Moreover, they sprinkle liquor on the walls."
The residents are not opposing the offerings at the dera because of the devotion of the disciples. A resident insisting upon anonymity said, "The youth is becoming addicted to alcohol due to this. They sit in the dera only to take the 'prasad' of liquor."
Temporary stalls of items like toys and eating-joints came up due to the ceremony. Security arrangements were also made.
