Making no headway in the murder of Akshay Kumar (14), boy whose body was fished from a canal here on April 4, the district police on Wednesday transferred the station house officer (SHO) of Dhuri.

SHO Parminder Singh, posted at Dhuri for a year, had faced criticism from the local people for his failure to act swiftly after the child had been reported missing. Last week also, people had organised a protest to demand his transfer. The police department, however, citied administrative reasons behind the measure. The new SHO, Kuldeep Singh, joined on Tuesday (April 9).

Akshay of Dhuri in Sangrur district had been missing since April 1 when found dead in the Babanpur canal on April 4. A student in Class 8 at Basant Valley school here, he had left home with father on a motorcycle and failed to return, after which, his family told the police that it feared he had been kidnapped. In spite of the missing report lodged on April 1, the police only made futile attempts to trace the child. After recovering Akshay’s body, they have registered a case but found no clue to the murder.

The SHO was transferred after senior officials took serious note of the casual approach of the investigation team he had led, a source in the police department has said. Asked about the transfer, senior superintendent of police Harcharan Singh Bhullar said the SHO had been transferred only on administrative grounds. "His transfer had nothing do with the murder investigation.”

Chief minister Prakash Singh Badal had directed the SSP to look into the matter perosanlly. Akshay’s stepfather, Raj Kumar, who runs a dry-cleaner's shop, had apprehened that his son might have been kidnapped and murdered. "We worked on many theories," said deputy superintendent of police Swaran Singh. "We suspect some young men from neighbouring villages to be involved in the crime. Nothing vital came up in the autopsy report and now we awaiting the results of the viscera analysis.”

The DSP confirmed that the police had rounded up some young men from nearby villages on basis of a tip from Akshay’s family.
