Following the Hindustan Times report (‘High on drugs and liquor, men prey on infant, young daughters in Punjab’, May 9), which highlighted torture and rape of infants and young girls by their fathers, Patiala deputy commissioner Priyank Bharti ordered an inquiry and constituted a five-member committee to look into the matter.

The committee formed under the chairmanship of additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Rajesh Tripathi will have Dr Harshindar Kaur, deputy medical superintendent, Government Rajindra Hospital, Patiala; Harinder Kaur, district education officer; Pushpa Devi, station house officer (SHO), women’s police station; and Rekha Ranu, child development project officer; as its four members.

In its report, HT had mentioned that despite horrifying and torturous treatment meted to their daughters by their drug-addict fathers, the victims’ mothers are not only reluctant to register a police complaint but also hesitant to have proper medical treatment of their daughters.

“A committee has been formed to inquire and give complete details in this regard. The committee may involve or summon any person or expert, if they deem it appropriate,” the DC said in his order.

The DC also marked the orders to the secretary, health and family welfare; Patiala’s senior superintendent of police; and the Patiala civil surgeon.
