The local police arrested a local Congress leader and three others for smuggling of drugs and recovered 10-kg opium worth Rs 10 lakh from their possession on Friday.

Senior superintendent of police Mandeep Singh Sidhu said the accused, identified as local Congress leader Nirmal Singh Pannu, Patran residents Aman Singh and Gurpratap Singh, and Tarn Taran resident Sarabjeet Singh, were arrested at a check post near Rai Dharana village, while their accomplice Bhagwant Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran, fled the spot.

Sidhu said the accused had confessed that they bought opium from Madhya Pradesh and stored it in the liquor shop owned by Nirmal, before supplying it to various villages.

Pannu is the husband of Rajwant Kaur, who had unsuccessfully contested the zila parishad elections from Patran.
