There seems to be no end of worries for students at Government Dental College with the college authorities failing to provide materials for the treatment of patients to them for over six months forcing the students to shell out money from their own pockets.
The students claimed that they had been spending around Rs 600 per patient and over Rs 4,000 a month on purchase of dental restorative and denture making materials for the treatment of patients, as the authorities remained helpless in making these materials available to them.
“The college authorities tell us if we want to operate the patients we need to bring in our own stuff, even though the dentistry materials are very expensive. However, having no options left, we have to bring in materials since we have to learn to operate patients practically,” alleged the students, adding that even basic amenities like hostel and canteen were missing on the campus.
While girl dentistry students are sharing hostel with students of Government Medical College, under graduate boys are left with no option but to live in rented accommodations outside the college premises.
The boys rued they had not been provided the hostel facility even though they requested the authorities time and again to make some arrangements for their accommodation.
“Only post graduate students are provided with hostel facility, and many of us live in rented accommodation nearby for which we pay between Rs 3,000 and Rs 4,000 for a room and shell out another `2,000 on food,” said a boy student.
In the meantime, the college authorities said that they had sent a proposal for the clearance of bills from treasury for the purchase of materials required for the treatment of patients.
Principal Dr Vipin Bharti said the lapse in providing materials had happened for the first time.
“At government institutes it takes time to invite tenders and quotes. Moreover, we have to buy the best materials at the cheapest price. Presently, the bills are pending with the treasury, and we have been waiting for its clearance,” said Dr Bharti.
