Even after clean chit in the daughter-in-law murder case, problems continue for former mayor Jaspal Singh Pardhan.
On Tuesday evening, after much reluctance, the police charged Pardhan and his son, Preetinder Singh, with participating in unlawful activities and injuring hotelier Gurdeep Singh Walia and his brother, Manjit Singh, critically in Patiala on Sunday (April 7). The siblings were at Pardhan's house to get back the money they had allegedly paid him as bribe to save their motel from demolition.
The Walia had escalated the matter after the motel was brought down. The hotelier's parents stated here on Tuesday that on Sunday, Pradhan had called their sons inside his house on the pretext settling the issue amicably but attacked them by deception. Walia's family also had released an audio tape that supposedly exposed the bribe incident.
The hotelier's brother, Manjit, was referred to Dayanand Medical College Hospital in Ludhiana because one of his lungs had been punctured with a sword in the attack and he had sustained other serious injuries. The police have registered the case against Pardhan and his son under Sections 323 (punishment for causing injuries voluntarily), 324 (causing injuries voluntarily with weapons), and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on the statement of hotelier Gurdeep Singh Walia.
Kulwant Singh, station house officer of Tripuri, confirmed that the police could add Section 307 of the IPC (attempt to murder) to the first-information report (FIR) once Manjit, who was unfit, so far, had recorded his statement. Earlier, the police had slapped the same sections on Gurdeep and Manjit on the complaint of Pradhan on Monday (April 8).
