From January 1, 2013, all kinds of generic drugs would be available free-of-cost to the patients in government hospitals across the state.

Disclosing this while chairing a meeting of health officials, deputy commissioner GK Singh said that a decision in this regard had already been taken by the government and all government hospitals instructed accordingly.

The DC also instructed the senior health officials of the district to personally monitor the programmes and carry out awareness drives so that the common man could benefit from the scheme.

He said special teams have been made to implement the programme. "Besides, checking implementation, these teams would carry out special raids on the hospitals to ensure no money was being charged for the drugs in hospitals," said the DC.

While reviewing different health programmes in the district, the DC apprised the staff that Patiala had topped the list in implementation of free delivery scheme for pregnant women across the state.

The DC said that the district was also ahead in the task of health checkups of school students.
