A 45-room twin-storey girls' hostel has started functioning at the Government Mohindra College on Sunday. The three-acre facility is the first hostel for girls in the college.

Renovated at a cost of Rs 32 lakh, the building was previously being used as a boys' hostel. The building was declared unsafe in 2001 and has been rebuilt from the funds provided by the Panchayati Raj department.

The ground floor would house under-graduate students and postgraduates will be housed at the first floor. A new common room has also been constructed with the donations from philanthropist NRI SP Oberoi.

Principal Sukhbir Singh Thind said that for non-local female students of the college, finding accommodation in the city was a big challenge.

"Among the 95 applicants for a hostel seat this year, we have three from Himachal Pradesh, four from Haryana and two from Uttaranchal, with the majority from the Malwa region," he said.

Four staff members and two guards have been appointed for the security of students.
