In 7 days of trial, man gets 7-yr jail for raping minor

In pursuance of the recent instructions issued by the chief justice of Punjab and Haryana high court for speedy trial in the cases pertaining to crimes against women, a court here completed the trial in seven days and awarded 7 years' rigorous imprisonment to the accused for raping a 14-year-old girl.


The Bhadson police had booked one Jiwan Singh of Gobindpura village for raping a minor girl on June 29, 2012.

The charges were framed only on January 8 and the trial started on January 14. District and sessions judge RS Attri recorded evidence in three days up to January 16, when he reserved the judgment and pronounced it on Monday. The court convicted  and  sentenced  Jiwan Singh to  seven years of rigorous  imprisonment and fine of Rs 5,000 under Section 376 of the IPC. The accused was also sentenced to three years' jail and fine of Rs 3,000 under Section 452 of the IPC.

The court also recommended compensation to the victim under the amended provisions of section 357A of CrPC. For this purpose, it has been ordered that the case be put up before district legal services authority, Patiala, for grant of compensation.
 
The case
On June 29, 2012, at about 1.30 pm, the victim was alone at her house, when accused Jiwan Singh entered the house and overpowered her. The accused gagged her with the help of a 'dupatta' and put a handkerchief in her mouth. He also tied her arms and legs and raped her. When victim's mother Nachhatar Kaur knocked at the door from outside, the accused fled the crime scene after scaling the wall. The victim was taken to the civil hospital at Bhadson, where she was examined by Dr Harpreet Kaur, before being referred to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala for the determination of her bone age  and for further treatment.
