Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD), along with six local NGOs, on Sunday organised a seminar on 'Renewable energy sources and sustainable development' on the eve of anniversary of Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan.

IDPD general secretary said renewable energy resources could meet India's energy requirements, besides such resources were environment friendly and safe.

"India has the potential of generating 5,000 trillion KW hours of electricity per year from Solar and 1,02,788 MW from wind. And our country will need only 3,128 trillion KW hour of electrical energy per year in the future," he said.

"So, main annual need can be met through renewable energy resources, but there was lack of political will to take a decision in this reagard," he said.

Local coordinator of the NGO Balbir Singh said that the nuclear plants were neither safe nor economical.

Engineers of Punjab Pollution Control Board highlighted various measures being taken by the board to check pollution. More than 200 individuals took part in the seminar.
