To win his unrequited love on Valentine's Day, a 21-year-old man concocted his suicide story and landed in jail.

Dharminder Singh, a resident of Sangrur city, along with his brother-in-law Sukhpal Singh, planned his fake suicide to blackmail the girl and her family into marrying him.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harcharan Singh Bhullar said Dharminder, a student of BA first year at a local college, was rejected in love so wanted to take revenge by implicating the girl's family in his fake suicide.

He said the Sangrur police had received information from the Patiala police control room on Tuesday that a person had committed suicide by jumping into the Bhakra mainline canal.

“The police recovered blood-stained clothes and a suicide note from the banks of the river. In the suicide note, Dharminder had accused the girl's family of thrashing him and forcing him to taking such an extreme step,” Bhullar said.

He said: “During investigations, the police neither spotted any footprints of a person jumping into the river nor any other signs of struggle at the spot.”

Meanwhile, the girl's father informed the police on Wednesday morning that Dharminder and Sukhpal had assaulted him and members of his family physically after he had turned down Dharminder's marriage proposal for his daughter.

The police arrested Dharminder from his residence on Wednesday night, while Sukhpal, a resident of Lehragaga, is still on the run.

Bhullar said Dharminder had confessed that he had pricked his elbows on a needle. “He stained his clothes with the blood that oozed out of his elbows and wrote a suicide note to conspire against the girl's family,” Bhullar said.

He had also misinformed the Patiala police about jumping into the river, he said.

“Dharminder fled to Chandigarh after committing the crime and returned to Sangrur on Wednesday,” the SSP said.

The police have registered a case against the duo on the charges of fabricating false
