Three policemen, who have been booked for printing counterfeit currency to produce it as evidence in the court, remain at large even after nine days of registration of a case against them at the Mandi Ahmedgarh police station.

The accused -- SHO Jarnail Singh and head constable Teja Singh, posted at Mandi Ahmedgarh sadar police station; and Balwinder Rai, a police employee (naib court); have already been suspended from service. Amit Kumar, one of the accused, is also on the run.

Jarnail Singh had filed an application for anticipatory bail, which the district and sessions court rejected on June 17.

The case has been registered under Sections 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant), 489-A (counterfeiting currency), 489-C (possession of forged or counterfeit currency) and 201 (destruction of evidences) of the IPC against the cops.

The police had confiscated fake currency and registered a case in 2007. The police station authorities had lost the case property (fake currency) while shifting to the new premises. In the meantime, as the police officials failed to present the case property in the court, the latter repeatedly sent them summons.

Finding themselves in a fix, the SHO and two other employees allegedly contacted Amit Kumar, a resident of Mandi Ahmedgarh, for printing fake currency amounting to Rs 1.41 lakh.

After printing the fake currency, they presented it in the court of the Sangrur additional sessions judge as case property.

Fearing that they would be caught anytime for their wrongdoing, the guilty policemen later destroyed the evidence instead of depositing it in the 'malkhana'.

Sangrur deputy superintendent of police Gurpreet Singh Dhindsa said all accused were at large and attempts had been made to nab them. "Regular raids have been conducted at possible hideouts of the accused, but to no avail," he said.

Dhindsa said the fake currency, which was presented in the court, was found missing during checking of the Mandi Ahmedgarh police station.
