Demanding regularisation of their jobs, hundreds of contractual nurses appointed under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), on Tuesday staged a protest  by blocking traffic for hours in the city.

Agitating nurses from across the state, who came here for their meeting with the finance minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa, decided to block the traffic  at the Lal Batti chowk after the finance minister refused to accept their demand during the meeting.

Talking to Hindustan times, Navneet Kaur, state president of the NRHM Nurses' Union said: "Despite his assurance, the finance minster refused to accept our demands and said that the state treasury was empty and the government cannot afford their regularization."

"It is ironical that the state government had paid ` 7 crore to bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra for her performance in kabaddi world
cup, but they cannot afford salary of the poor nurses, who work day and night to ensure good health of the people", she said adding:

"If the government will not accept our demands we will boycott the coming Lok Sabha elections, and will launch a door to door campaign against the SAD-BJP candidates".

She said that nurses' union will continue its protest until their demands of regular jobs was not met.  "From Wednesday, we will start our indefinite protest from Sangrur, then it will cover the entire state", she added.
