City residents got a respite from soaring heat as the thick clouds enveloped the city on Wednesday morning from 5:45am to 6.20am. However, the relief was short-lived as with just 6.8 mm of rainfall, the city became a pool of rainwater, exposing the ill-preparedness of the municipal corporation (MC).

Though the municipal corporation has spent crores laying new sewerage and drainage system, tall claims of the municipal corporation fell flat as water logging was reported from many areas.

Rainwater had swept into houses located in the low-lying areas and small water puddles were seen all across the city. Even before the arrival of monsoons, a brief spell of rain has exposed the municipal corporation's seriousness and commitment towards ensuring proper drainage of rainwater.

Parminder Pal, a resident of Anand Nagra, said: "The problem of water logging has been persistent in the city for ages. Every year, rains bring along miseries for the city. We have to make our own preventive measures to protect our household things from rainwater."

In the low-lying areas, the MC has constructed new roads that are above the ground level, resulting in rainwater entering houses of people.

"Heavy rains usually carry garbage into colonies, flood the houses with contaminated water leading to outbreak of many diseases", said Harpeet Kaur, a resident of Tripari.

The meteorological department has predicted that for next four days short spells of rain with cloudy forecast.
