Rural development minister Surjit Singh Rakhra on Wednesday gave credit to the media for exposing corruption in the country and expected that the vigil would continue.

He was presiding over a seminar on the "role of media in changing social setup" that the Patiala Media Club had organised here. Shiromani Akali Dal spokesman Dr Daljit Singh Cheema and mayor Amrinder Singh Bajaj were present. Navjit Johal, professor of journalism at Punjabi University, delivered the keynote address.

Johal called for more investigative journalism with pro-public approach. "The media have enough power to set the agenda for policy makers," he said. "However, the media now are dominated by politics and driven by personality. Paid news is the biggest threat to its credibility."

Dr Cheema and mayor Bajaj also spoke on the subject. Dr Cheema credited the media with brining change and awareness, and called for more space to development journalism instead of only to sensational cases and celebrity lifestyle. "Highlight good governance in the private and public sectors," he told media organisations.

Cabinet minister Rakhra gave away Rs 5 lakh as official grant to the Patiala Media Club for building an office in Patiala.
