A rape victim bled to death here on Sunday after her in-laws allegedly took Rs 15,000 from the accused, who is backed by a former Akali sarpanch, for not reporting the incident to the police or doctors.
The victim (22), a resident of Bhari Bhanicha village in Bhadson block of the district, died due to excessive bleeding at Rajindra Hospital. She was allegedly raped by Amarjit Singh, a meter reader of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), on Friday. It was only when her condition worsened that her in-laws took her to a village hospital, from where she was referred to Rajindra Hospital in a critical state.
The woman's in-laws allegedly reached a compromise with Amarjit through former Akali sarpanch Mehnga Singh and Akali worker Sarabjit Singh.
Hours before her death, the woman told her father that she had been raped. Following her demise, he informed the police, who reached the hospital and took the body for a post-mortem examination.
An FIR was registered under sections 376 (rape), 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Amarjit, the victim's husband Narain Singh, her brother-in-law Gurmel Singh and sister-in-law Pal Kaur, besides Mehnga and Sarabjit.
Station house officer (SHO) Gurinder Singh said the case had been registered on the basis of the statement given by the woman's father. He added that Amarjit had been arrested.
Meanwhile, Akali leaders of the area, including Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Satwinder Singh Tohra, Gian Singh and Amandeep Singh Bhangu, along with their supporters, held a protest outside the Bhadson police station, demanding that the names of the Akali duo be removed from the FIR.
The victim's father and others also held a protest and warned of dire consequences if the police deleted any name from the FIR.
