In the backdrop of tension between members of the Neelkantheshwar Ram Mandir Sitasar Temple Committee and the Kamboj community  in Sunam, the temple committee on Thursday  submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner, seeking police security during a proposed kar seva likely to commence from March 31.

Led by the temple committee's president Haridev Goel, over 10 members submitted a memorandum to the ADC in the absence of the deputy commissioner.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Sumer Garg, former president of the temple committee, said:"The temple committee has planned to start year-long construction in the Sitasar temple. First we are planning to construct  a big sarovar and after that a "dham" will be constructed."

He said that as the members of a certain community were against the construction,  the committee had demanded police protection until the construction was completed to avert any untoward incident.

Last month, tension prevailed in Sunam town, when some members of the Kamboj community allegedly tried to disrupt religious ceremonies and staked claim over a portion of the sarovar, spread over 84 bigas.

Six police officers were injured in the scuffle. The proposed construction may instigate the members of the other community as the temple committee members want to prove their possession on the sarovar by constructing a "dham".

Sangrur SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu said that as the polls were nearing, maintaining peace in the district was the top priority. But the decision to provide security could be taken only after the recommendations of the district administration.

However, when contacted Sangrur deputy commissioner Indu Malhotra said: "I was out of station today. I will first see the copy of the memorandum for the further order."
