With the cold wave engulfing the region on Thursday morning, the state-level function here to commemorate Kuka martyrs remained lacklustre. Even the chief guests reached the venue late by three hours.

But enthusiastic leaders and supporters of the Namdhari sect managed to start the proceedings on time.

Finance minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa and PWD minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, who were busy with the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee polls and were the chief guests at the function, reached the venue late by three hours.

Dhillon paid floral tributes at the martyrs' memorial and left the venue after delivering a speech.

Both ministers would reportedly go back to the election canvassing in Delhi later. Many senior SAD leaders reached the venue only after arrival of the ministers.

Various local leaders, including MLA Nisara Khatoon, were conspicuous by their absence. Deputy commissioner Kumar Rahul and SSP Harcharan Singh Bhullar gave the event the miss.

Malkit Singh Dakha from the Congress was present on the occasion.
