Woman set afire for dowry

A man allegedly set his wife on fire on October 11 night, after she was unable to fulfill demands for dowry in Dhuri, 15 km from here.

The police have booked the husband Tejinderpal Sharma and his parents on the charges of murdering Ritu, 36.

Investigation officer Parminder Singh said that an FIR was registered on the statement of the Ritu's father. Ritu's family resides in Nirwana in Haryana.

The complainant alleged that Ritu's husband and in-laws had been torturing Ritu for long demanding more dowry. On October 11, Ritu had called her parents that she was being tortured. She also said expresseded apprehensions that she would be set on fire, if the in-laws' demands were not met.

Ritu's father told the police that they tried contacting her several times after the distressing call, but her mobile was switched off. Even her husband's mobile could not be reached.

However, after nearly an hour, the same night (October 11), the police called them to inform them that Ritu had been admitted to the local civil hospital with 90% burn injuries and had succumbed to the injuries.

"Her father alleged that her in-laws poured kerosene on her daughter and ser her ablaze," the police said.

No arrests had been made till the filing of the report.

"Investigations are on and raids are being conducted to nab accused," the investigating officer said.
