The Youth Akali Dal (YAD) workers on Friday burnt the effigies of All India Congress Committee (AICC) vice president Rahul Gandhi for his recent remarks, wherein he admitted the involvement of some party leaders in the 1984 riots in Delhi.
The protesters demanded custodial interrogation of Gandhi to find out the names to the Congress leaders involved in the riots that followed the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
In Patiala, YAD treasurer Harpal Juneja, district president Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, district (urban) president Capt Preetinder Singh led the protest outside the mini secretariat where the workers burnt rahul Gandhi's effigy.
The YAD protesters said that apart from tendering an apology for the riots, the Gandhi family should name all the Congressmen involved in the carnage. They asked the Punjab Congress leaders to protest in front of the residences of the Gandhi family members for "shielding the accused as no one has been sentenced for the killing of thousands of Sikhs in Delhi during the riots."
At Fatehgarh Sahib, YAD general secretary Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra led the protest outside the mini secretariat. The protesters burnt an effigy of the AICC vice president here also.
"The CBI should take Rahul Gandhi in custody and interrogate him to find out the names of the Congress leaders involved in the riots . In fact, the Gandhi family was directly involved in the case as the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had made a statement that 'when a big tree falls, the earth shakes. Thus, Rahul Gandhi should be taken into custody for interrogation", said Chandumajra.
In Sangrur also, YAD workers, led by district president Satguru Singh Namol, staged a protest against Rahul Gandhi and burnt his effigy. The protesters raised anti-Congress slogans and accused the Gandhi family of shielding the party leaders involved in the riots.
