An 11-year-old dalit schoolgirl was brutally raped by her neighbour late on Friday night in Rohtas district of south-western Bihar.
The incident took place at Kochas market, about 50km north-east of the Rohtas district headquarters town of Sasaram.
"An FIR has been lodged at the Kochas police station by the victim’s mother against a name accused, who is absconding,” Kochas SHO Rajiv Nayan told HT, confirming the incident.
Informed sources said the girl’s parents had gone to attend a marriage at their relative’s house in a nearby village and had requested the neighbour, Manoj Chauhan (40), a stone trader, to look after the girl.
However, on Friday night, Chauhan took the girl to his rented house, where he is alleged to have raped her. "He fled from the spot after the girl fell unconscious," said an official.
The girl regained consciousness on Saturday morning and reported the matter to her cousin, who in turn informed girl’s parents on the phone.
The parents rushed back to Kochas market, after which the mother lodged the FIR. The police later took the girl to the Sadar hospital, Sasaram for medical examination. The rapist is still absconding.
Rohtas superintendent of police Vikas Verman did not respond to repeated calls placed on his official mobile.
