Senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi, on Thursday, dared RJD president Lalu Prasad to cancel and give up all the land received as gift by his family members from various donors till now, as he claimed to have done in the case of the gift given to his son and health minister Tej Pratap Yadav by former RJD leader, now BJP MP, Rama Devi.
“I challenge the RJD chief to cancel all the gifts of land, which his family members received from Raghunath Jha, Kanti Singh, Lalan Choudhary, Hridyanand Choudhary, Prabhunath Yadav and others,” said Modi, while addressing a press conference here at the BJP office.
On Tuesday last, Modi had alleged that Tej Pratap had received 13 acres and 12 dismals of land as gift from Rama Devi on March 23, 1992. The property was located at Kishunpur village in Madhuban area in Muzaffarpur district. He, however, had said he had no information about the present status of the said land.
Countering Modi’s charge, Lalu Prasad on Wednesday had told newsmen that the BJP leader’s allegation was false. He said Rama Devi’s husband Brij Bihari Prasad had indeed come to him with the gift deed, expressing his desire to donate the said land to his elder son. “I got peeved at the proposal and refused to accept it. Later, the deed was cancelled in 1993,” he said.
“Moreover, gift deed can’t be executed unless both the recipient and the donor agree on it,” he had argued. He had also threatened to file a defamation suit against Modi, if he failed to tender an apology in the next a couple of days.
Modi, who was deputy chief minister (2005-13), in Nitish Kumar led NDA government, said if the deed was defective then there was no need of getting it cancelled. It stood cancelled automatically, he added.
Also, Modi wondered why the RJD chief took 15 months to cancel the gift deed and why Brij Bihari Prasad kept the deed secret for 15 months. “It is possible that Lalu Prasad did not like the cheap land and chose not to accept it, whereas his family members retained other land gifts in the urban locations, which they found precious,” he added.
The BJP leader said in the last 90 days since he started exposing the members of the Lalu family acquiring properties worth Rs 1,000 crore, the RJD president contradicted only one allegation.
“If he feels that my all exposes are baseless and his family does not possess the properties, then he should tell the fact to the income tax department. He should also inform the department that the properties attached by the IT authorities did not belong to his family members,” he said.
On Lalu’s threat of instituting a defamation suit against him if he failed to tender an apology, the BJP leader said, “The RJD chief is free to do anything. If he files a case, I will fight it.”
Modi also said there was little substance to Lalu’s prediction, on Wednesday, about a fresh political alignment and a possible alliance between Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati in UP.
“When Lalu tried and failed to sort out differences between father (Mulayam Singh Yadav) and son (Akhiles Yadav), before the UP assembly poll, how can he be expected to forge unity in the larger opposition ranks”, Modi asked.
