patna Updated: Jul 14, 2009 20:33 IST

Opposition members on Tuesday staged walk out in Bihar legislative council when the ruling party held RJD responsible for the sequence of events leading to police lathicharge on contract teachers before the legislature on July 10.

Demanding the RJD tender apology for the incident, Water Resources Development Minister Vijendra Prasad Yadav told the council, “RJD provoked the teachers appointed on fixed pay for political gains...instigated them (teachers) to indulge in vandalism...they are the culprit.”

Yadav, who was replying on behalf of the government to a special debate on lathicharge on teachers, said police had to resort to tear gas and water canons to disperse the agitating teachers who were hell bent to enter Bihar legislature by breaking the barricade.

Dissatisfied with the minister’s reply the members belonging to RJD, Congress, CPI and CPI(M) walked out the house.

Earlier participating in the debate, members Basudeom Singh, Mahachandra Prasad Singh, Kedarnath Pandey, Gulam Gaus termed the lathicharge as brutal and demanded a thorough probe.

Around 50,000 teachers had arsembled to demand regularisation of their service and pay parity with other government teachers.
