There are strong chances that RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s eldest daughter Misa Bharti and eminent lawyer Ram Jethmalani would be the two Rajya Sabha (RS) nominees of the party.
Insiders in the party maintained that Misa’s nomination for the Upper House was almost certain even though an official announcement to this effect is likely to be made tomorrow. Previously, Misa’s mother and former chief minister Rabri Devi was tipped to go to the Upper House.
It is learnt that Misa has shown her inclination to go to the parliament reasoning that she could give the party a better exposure in the Upper House and also play a more active role in national politics. Misa had unsuccessfully contested the 2014 parliamentary polls from Patliputra seat against sitting MP and Union minister Ram Kripal Yadav of the BJP.
For the second seat, there are chances that Jethmalani would be the RJD nominee. While Jethamalani is considered close to the RJD chief as the former handles Prasad’s legal cases, many party leaders are not so impressed with the proposal to send the eminent lawyer to RS.
Senior RJD leader and former MP Izaz Ali has sought that the party nominate a Muslim candidate as the minorities have been a major vote bank of the RJD.
On the other hand, JD (U) has already renominated its two sitting MPs - Sharad Yadav and RCP Singh - for the Upper House against two seats allotted to the party in the three-party Grand Alliance. The last date of nomination is May 30.
