Lakhan Nishad, son of former Bihar minister Vidya Sagar Nishad, was arrested in Patna for possession of liquor. It is illegal to sell or consume alcohol in the state since prohibition was launched this year.

Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Lakhan from his in-laws’ house in Mithapur area in Jakkanpur police station area here on Friday, and seized 12 bottles of branded liquor. He was taken to the police station for interrogation, police said.

This was not the first time Lakhan was on police radar for liquor possession. “But whenever we tried to nab Lakhan with liquor, he managed to escape,” police said.

Lakhan’s father, a former Rashtriya Janata Dal minister, is now in chief minister Nitish Kuamr’s Janata Dal (United) and represents the Morwa constituency of Samastipur district in the Bihar legislative assembly.

Jakkanpur station house officer (SHO) Amrendra Mishra said Lakhan was caught red-handed with liquor bottles on Friday.

“He was arrested from the house of his in-laws. Police are interrogating him to find out how he had procured liquor bottles,” he said. “A case is being registered with Jakkanpur police station in this connection.”

The SHO said Lakhan will be sent to jail after formalities were completed.
