A bridegroom’s weakness for liquor cost him his marriage when the bride refused to marry him and sought police protection.
The incident left villagers, bride’s family and community members stunned. An illiterate girl, Punam Kumari, daughter of a daily wager, Manoj Choudhary, was scheduled to solemnise marriage as per Hindu rituals with a daily wager, Sanjay Choudhary, in the premises of a temple here.
Gifts were exchanged in advance and the bride’s family had to spend a good amount for preparations and hosting dinner. When things were ready and the bride was brought to the ‘mandup’, the bridegroom was missing. Frantic searches led to the boy in an inebriated condition, creating an unruly scene nearby.
Punam was shocked to know that she was about to marry a liquor addict. Just when some persons took Sanjay to a nearby pond for a bath, hoping that it would make him normal, the bride slipped out of the ‘mandup’. Showing more courage, she ran to a police officer and sought his help.
DSP Dilnawaz Ahmad said though the groom’s father was ready to tender a written apology and promise that his son would never touch liquor in future, the bride remained firm on her decision and even threatened to commit suicide if she was forced to marry the drunken boy.
“I refused wedlock with a drunken person, for his bad habit would have spoiled my life,” Punam told HT.
