Gangwar resurfaced in the state capital once again when a 40-year-old man was shot dead, allegedly by the members of a rival gang, in the early hours of Monday.
Police said the victim Ashok Gupta was a resident of Lohanipur under Kadamkuan police station and prime accused in the murder of Munna Singh of Kankarbagh about six months ago.
Police have attributed past disputes between the two groups as the reason behind the murder.
Police said the incident took place at around 8am when Gupta and his friend Babloo went to a hotel for breakfast. As soon as he tried to enter the hotel premises, seven mobike-borne criminals intercepted him and pumped three bullets into his body. Eye witnesses said the assailants fired several rounds in the air and also hurled bombs to terrorise local residents. Later, Gupta was rushed to a private nursing home where he was declared brought dead. On getting information police rushed to the spot and recovered two empty bullets of DBBL gun.
Senior SP Amrit Raj said, police has detained the victim’s friend Babloo for interrogation. “Babloo is a close aide of Gupta and he may have invited him to the hotel for breakfast, where the incident occurred”, Amrit Raj added. On the other hand, police sources claimed, that the deceased was a police informant and also a mastermind of the killing of liquor trader Prem Singh of Pachhim Darwaza under Alamganj police station. But his name did not figure in the FIR. Prem’s body was recovered on the railway tracks, a day after the killing of another liquor trader Saket Kumar Gupta, a relative of DG rank police officer on May 7 (2012) near Kumhrar Park.
“The victim (Ashok Gupta) is also a close relative of Saket”, police stated. Ashok Gupta’s aides -history-sheeter Sangram Singh and Ranjit Singh (former mukhia) were killed in a gang war nearly 4-5 years ago, police added.
Police said, “The deceased, Prem Singh, was credited with providing legal help to another gangster Ajay Verma. So the Verma gang decided to take revenge and conspired to kill Gupta”.
Police suspect the Verma gang kept a track of Gupta’s movements. Knowing Gupta would be going to a hotel on his two-wheeler, the assailants laid a trap near the hotel falling under Kadamkuan police station.
