Freedom fighter and veteran Gandhian Acharya Rammurthy died at a hospital here today after protracted illness, hospital sources said. He was 89.

Besides being a staunch follower of Mahatma Gandhi and taking a vital role during the freedom movement, Rammurthy was also a close associate of Jayaprakash Narayan.

He was admitted to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology about two and a half months back following complaints of chest pain and uneasiness where he took his last breath this evening.

Several politicians including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, RJD president Lalu Prasad and leader of the opposition in Bihar assembly Rabri Devi condoled the death of Rammurthy.

His mortal remains would be cremated with full state honours on the bank of the Ganga tomorrow, Kumar said.
