Has sensitive information on the Indian Army formations and equipment already reached Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) operatives through Rana – the man involved in 26/11 Mumbai terror attack? The Intelligence Bureau is investigating Rana’s links and the quantum of information he had gathered about Indian Army through various sources including some in Bihar.
IB officials say, that one of Rana’s established sources was Sudhanshu Sudhakar, who was sacked from the Army’s Secunderabad unit due to his suspicious activities. Sudhakar, who is presently lodged in the Beur Central Jail near Patna, is said to have met Rana twice in Kathmandu and allegedly passed on vital information.
According to senior police officials, Rana had assigned Sudhakar to gather detailed information about important bases of the Indian Army and the Indian Ordnance Factory, including one in Bihar’s Nalanda district. Sudhakar, who belongs to Sitamarhi district bordering Nepal, had also stayed with some prominent Nepal-based ISI operatives.
During interrogation, Sudhakar had revealed to the Patna police that he was in constant touch with a retired Army personnel, M Ravindran and a sepoy posted at Secunderabad Army unit, Vivek Ranjan. The two armymen used to share information about deployment of the Army units at Secunderabad, Lucknow, Bhuj and Delhi. He had sent information to the ISI operatives twice.
It was Ravindran, who had given him information about missiles to the former Army personnel, who, in turn, sent it to Nepal-based ISI module coded as Rana. Rana had promised to give Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh for every information about the deployment of the Army units and missiles.
Sudhakar was caught from Kankarbagh police station area of the state Capital with important documents related to deployment of different Army units, including Pathankot (Punjab) and Jammu and Kashmir on September 22. Later, Ravindran was arrested from Andhra Pradesh and subsequently lodged in the Beur Central Jail.
Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Vineet Vinayak said, “No intelligence agencies have so far contacted us or sought any additional information about Sudhakar and Ravindran. We will see if there is any development in the case.”
