With serial blasts rocking the Mahabodhi temple and adjacent areas in Bodh Gaya early on Sunday morning, social networking sites Twitter and Facebook witnessed quite a buzz.
While many netizens regretted the incidents, a perplexed majority of them questioned the state government’s inaction over repeated intimations from the intelligence bureau that the temple might be targeted.
A tweet by Manish Nair read, "Govt sat on IB's prior warning of terror attack in Bodh Gaya." Another tweet said, "Govt should rename its own agency IB as 'Ignore Bureau'"
A number of users also lashed out at political parties for politicising the attacks, saying that the exercise was "unfortunate and wrong."
Several others opined the blasts showed the Bihar government had "weakened and change was required." "Somebody giving some message to Nitish…..who?" wondered a tweet by Sushil Sharma.
A user, NADZ shk, however, pointed out that while a specific community was being blamed for the attack, nobody was blaming the Maoists who had "much strong influence in Bihar."
Suhaib Mulla's posting read, "Bodh Gaya blasts are a sign of desperation - whoever did it. And clearly has elections 2014 on mind."
Many joked chief minister Nitish Kumar would now blame Narendra Modi for the attack, as it occurred a day after Modi conducted teleconferencing with BJP workers in Bihar.
Many others condemned the suggestion and said that such incidents would not deter Kumar.
As various reports on the CM's visit to the Mahabodhi temple trickled in, several expressed anger why the media, the CM and his entourage were allowed on the spot before the forensic experts lifted evidence from the area.
"What a total a**. Before NIA could collect evidence from Bodh Gaya, Nitish walks all over the monastery with 50 in tow," said a user, Payal Kamat.
Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah, had, perhaps, the last word on the issue. "We live in a country where taking pen-drives to offices is much harder than taking bombs to temples", read his posting.
Later, he tweeted, "CBI ka bas chale to Kasab ko Bodh Gaya ke liye doshi saabit kar sakti hai (If the CBI had its way, it would have proven Kasab responsible for the Bodh Gaya attack)."
