RJD on Thursday demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh act immediately for filling up vacant posts of judges in High Courts to speed up disposal of cases.
"There is a huge backlog of cases piling up for disposal in the High Courts ... Immediate steps are required to be taken for filling their vacant posts in superior courts, including High Courts", RJD deputy leader in Bihar assembly and senior lawyer Shakeel Ahmed Khan said.
"The Prime Minister should act immediately for filling the vacant posts in High Courts to help up speed up the disposal of the backlog," Khan urged.
A three-member collegium of judges led by Patna High Court Chief Justice had recommended a panel of names for appointment through the state government and the governor and after due consideration of the High Court's suggestions, a 5-member collegium of the Supreme Court led by the chief justice had forwarded the panel to the Centre.
"The list is awaiting sanction of the Union law ministry since long for seeking presidential assent", he said.
Khan urged the Union law ministry to simplify the process of appointments by making suitable amendments to the existing law.
