The state government’s decision to provide X category security cover to former Member of Parliament from Maharajganj, Prabhunath Singh, who faces serious criminal charges, has raised many eyebrows.
Under the new arrangement, Singh would be entitled to two gun-wielding security personnel. The new security arrangements for the former JD (U) MP have been made in the wake of the threat perception to his life.
The government’s sudden move has, however, come as a surprise to many police officials, as Singh is facing charges of murder and kidnapping. Besides, many cases under the Arms Act and Explosive Substance Act are also pending against him in different courts.
A senior IPS officer, Amitabh Kumar Das (Commandant of BMP 12), shot off a letter to the AIG (Inspection) in this connection, the copy of which was also sent to the ADG (Special Branch) last week, giving details of the former MP’s criminal antecedents. The letter said that the Special Branch already had detailed information about the JD (U) leader’s criminal antecedents. At least 22 cases were lodged against the ex-MP in different police stations of Saran, Siwan and Patna districts.
The then Saran Superintendent of Police Jagmohan (vide letter number 7729 dated November 15, 2005) had also submitted a list of the criminal cases lodged against Singh. Most of the cases were lodged with Masarakh police stations in which chargesheets have also been submitted against him.
There are some cases in which evidence had not been found against the JD (U) leader and subsequently he was exonerated of the charges levelled against him.
“The former MP’s criminal records are sufficient to establish the fact that Singh is a notorious criminal,” the letter said, adding that Singh had already been chargesheeted in six murder cases.
When approached for comments, Additional Director General (headquarters), U S Dutt said, “Actually, I do not deal with this subject. So, I don’t have any information in this regard.” Dutt is the official spokesman of the state police.
The Special Protection Group, National Security Guards, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and the Central Reserve Police Force are the agencies responsible for providing security to VVIPs, VIPs, politicians, high-profile celebrities and sports persons.
In Bihar, former railway minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad, former union minister and Lok Janshakti Party supremo Ram Vilas Paswan and former chief minister Rabri Devi have been provided Z plus security cover.
