A 50-year-old doctor was shot at by four gangsters late on Wednesday evening reportedly for refusing to cough up extortion money. The incident took place at Ragarganj more under Daraunda police station of crime prone Siwan district.
The firing on the doctor took place on a day the police recovered the body of a prominent fertilizer and medicine trader Harishankar Singh, who was abducted during morning walk from near Panchrukhi railway station in Siwan on November 15 last. His body was found cut to pieces and decaying with maggots all over yesterday.
The shooting incident took place when doctor Raj Kishore Singh, a resident of Bhimpurva village under Mohammadpur police station of Gopalganj, was returning from his health centre. As soon as Singh reached Ragarganj more, criminals intercepted him. One of them forced a pistol into his mouth.
Siwan SP Saurabh Kumar Sah said the doctor lodged an FIR against one Mukesh Rai for threatening him, demanding extortion money and attempt to murder. “We have registered a case of attempt to murder and demanding extortion against Rai and his associates. One of the suspects have been arrested in this connection,” he added.
It is unclear whether the four criminals wanted to shoot at him or merely scare him.
The first shot was aborted as the pistol failed to fire. The second bullet hit Singh’s foot.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Mukesh Kumar Rai gang might have been behind the assault, as the doctor had been receiving extortion threats for the last few days.
The doctor was rushed to sadar hospital where doctors examined his condition and found that the bullet had exited from his body.
It is not the first incident of a doctor being targeted in Siwan. Earlier on August 23, Dr Onkar Nath Srivastava was also shot at in Bhagwanpur police station area. Dr Srivastava succumbed three days later in a Patna hospital.
