Two jawans of Bihar’s special auxiliary police (SAP) were reportedly killed and three other policemen were injured when suspected Maoists riding on three motorbikes opened fire on a police patrolling party in Bihar’s extremism hit Gaya district.

Official sources said the incident took place late evening on Monday near Kanjiar under Dobhi police station of Gaya, a south-central Bihar district and a major theatre of violent left extremism.

This was second such attack in this part of Bihar during the past two months or so. Earlier, six SAP jawans were killed in a Maoist strike on a SAP camp in Gaya’s neighbouring Aurangabad district.

Confirming the attack, Magadh range DIG of police BS Meena said the police paatrolling party of six came under fire between Kanjiar and Amarut villages, located a kilometer apart and close to Bihar’s border with Jharkhand.

“Six ultras riding three motorbikes chased the night patrol jeep for some distance before opening fire. Two SAP jawans were killed and a sub-inspector, another SAP jawan and the driver received splinter injuries”, Meena told HT.

He said the driver managed to sprint the jeep towards Amarut, preventing a higher casualty figure and saving the patrolling party’s arms from being looted by the extremists.

The injured were rushed to the ANS Magadh medical college in Gaya town for treatment, where they were stated to be out of danger. “The Gaya SSP and CRPF’s CoBRA battalion have rushed to the spot to carry out combing operations”, the DIG added.
