A tale of two prisoners
On Tuesday, Bhikhiwind village in Punjab's Tarn Taran district was euphoric after word got around that the death sentence of Sarabjit Singh, a prisoner in Pakistan, would be commuted to life imprisonment. But the joy was shortlived. Almost at the stroke of midnight, Pakistan announced that it was Surjeet Singh of Ferozepur (also in Punjab) who had been granted relief and not Sarabjit. When dawn broke on Wednesday, it brought with it fresh hopes and cheers for Surjeet's family, but for Sarabjit's near and dear ones it was as if the sun had not risen at all.
