Picturesque Kailash Mansarovar
A view of the northwestern face of Mount Kailash from Dirapuk, the site of a 13th century Buddhist monastery.
This was the first glimpse of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar. It was an electrifying moment. Pilgrims wept, stood transfixed, prostrated themselves on the ground and prayed.

At Lake Mansarovar, a Tibetan nomad with her tent of goodies -- water and instant noodles at the back.
The 10 km trek to Dirapuk from where one can see the northwest face of Mount Kailash up close, can take 3-6 hours. We climbed from an altitude of 14300 ft to 16100 feet in four hours.
The abode of shiva:
