Photos: 16th Rainbow Pride Walk for LGBTQ rights held in Kolkata

Started in 1999 as The Friendship Walk, the Kolkata Rainbow Pride March is one of the oldest pride marches in South Asia. This year the march took place from Deshapriya Park to Park Circus n Kolkata and coincided with the International Human Rights day, celebrated every year on December 10.

Under Indian Penal Code Section 377, same sex relationships are considered ‘unnatural’ and are subject to criminal prosecution. Earlier this year, the LGBTQ community across India welcomed the Supreme Court’s Right to privacy ruling and said it would boost their fight against the 2013 SC judgment which re-criminalised gay sex in December 2013 — popularly known as the Naz verdict.
