A member of the Gaja Marne gang was arrested by Anti-Organised Crime Cell of Pune police on Friday night. Ganesh Masurkar (25), a resident of Kalewadi Nasrapur in Bhor, has nine previous cases registered against him, including one count of murder and an attempted murder, according to a police statement.

One murder case against Masurkar is at the Sahkar Nagar police station while another one is at the Haveli police station, said Police Inspector Raj Mane of the Anti-Organised Crime Cell, while speaking to Hindustan Times. Both the cases are from 2012, he added.   Mane also claimed that the Pune Police (rural) will book him under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime, 1999 (MCOCA) act. Police Inspector Talwar of Rajgadh police station, which comes under rural police, confirmed that another gang member named Pappu Ghopal, with whom Masurkar was in touch, will also be booked under MCOCA in a 2016 case.

Once booked under MCOCA, considered to be one of the most stringent laws in the state, it will be difficult for Masurkar to get bail. MCOCA will be introduced in an old case of extortion against Masurkar. In 2016, he was arrested and subsequently released on bail, in a case where he threatened to break down a beer shop, in Rajgadh police juridiction, unless the owner paid him Rs 3000 per month.

Information of Masurkar arriving at his house in Bhor led to his arrest, according to the police statement. He was with the Anti-Organised Crime Cell for questioning before being handed over to the Sahkar Nagar police station. Gajanan Marne and a few of his senior aides are serving jail term in various cases.
