On the day the government appointed Anupam Kher as the chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), the institute in Pune saw a backlash involving the students and the administration. Ten students were rusticated for a semester by the administration.

The students were served notices after they boycotted meetings as a part of dialogue exercise, a project for third semester students. According to the FTII student association president Robin Roy, the students have been rusticated for the current semester after they did not attend the dialogue exercise meeting. “Ten students have received notices from the administration saying they have been suspended for a semester. These students have also been asked to leave the hostel immediately,” Roy said.

When contacted, Milind Joshi, public relations officer (PRO) at FTII said he is unaware about the issue. Despite repeated attempts to contact FTII director Bhupendra Kainthola and dean Amit Tyagi, they could not be reached.

“I have no information about the notices,” said Joshi.

Following the notices, FTII students’ association held a meeting to discuss the issue. The outcome of the meeting was not known till the time of going to press. In recent times, FTII has seen friction between students and the administration. In 2015, the FTII students protested against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan. The students were also at loggerheads with the administration over completion of projects. The students even gheraoed the, then, FTII director Prashant Pathrabe for his decision to expedite the process of completion of projects.
