National mountain cyclist Ajay Padval (22), who acted as body double for Bollywood actor Salman Khan in his movie ‘Kick’, passed away after a road accident at Khardung-La, the highest mountain pass in Ladakh, on Wedneday.

Ajay had gone for an excursion with his friends to Kargil and Leh-Ladakh. On Tuesday morning, he went for a leisure ride to Khardung-la. As his friends didn’t go with him, he decided to ride alone. Later in the afternoon, he was found lying next to the road.

Onlookers immediately carried him to local hospital in Leh. He had severe injuries and a cracked skull.

“He was riding alone, so nobody knows how the accident happened. He was wearing a helmet but still had a skull crack. He was on the ventilator till yesterday evening and the doctor reasoned brain haemorrhage for his demise,” informed Ajay’s friend Vinay Menon of ‘Freerider’ magazine.

Gurjusit Singh of Chandigarh Cycling Club alleged that an airlift for Ajay from Leh to Delhi or Chandigarh might have saved him.

“To airlift him, they needed him to be stable, but that didn’t happen. His pulse was not stable. So an exact reason isn’t shared by the people on location yet,” said Menon.

Adios, Ajay Padval

Ajay was an adventure enthusiast and was associated with Freerider Magazine and Psynyde Bikes. He started riding in 2006 and emerged as the best youngest rider at a BMX event in Pune. Then he had several podium finishes in national tournaments.

In 2013, he was third in the Decathlon Bike and Hike in Pune, and Impossible Race XC (Gujarat) in 2015. In the same year, he again finished third in Himachal Downhill Trophy in Manali. He earned second place in the Indian Shredder Downhill race in Pune. Last year, he was runner-up in the Bangalore Mountain Festival Downhill Race.
