A 19-year-old man was arrested for hacking his 17-year-old sister to death near their house in Shindegaon region of Chakan on June 26.

Lakhan Waghmare was arrested by the police after he confessed to have hacked his sister, Sheetal Waghmare to death, over her friendship with some local youth, after four days of questioning. The case was investigated by Police Inspector Manoj Yadav of Chakan police station.

Sheetal had left from home around 10:30 am in order to use the nearby patch of land for defecation, the police said. She was found with the lower half of her body naked, and two wounds on her neck and one on her face, according to the police.

Her brother, Lakhan Waghmare, who works as a contract labourer, had misled the police by saying that he was out on an off day. She was believed to have been alone as her mother was at her native village, Chakur in Latur.

Her father Balaji Waghmare, who is a mason worker, had gone looking for her after she failed to return home and found her body at 2 pm on the same day approximately 500 metres from their rented house.

The police had tapped their informants in areas including Shindegaon Vasoli, Varale, Ambethan, Mhalunge, Sandubare, Chakan and Talegaon MIDC before suspecting a family members' involvement.

A day after the girl was found, her mother had returned from Chakur and the body was taken to their native place for conducting the last rites, the police said.
