Commuting on the Pune-Alandi road at Magazine chowk has become a nightmare for many commuters with frequent traffic jams and slow moving traffic. On the other hand, the Moshi toll plaza is infamous for over speeding vehicles and has witnessed three fatal accidents this year.
The Pune traffic department has identified spots like Magazine chowk on Pune-Alandi road and Moshi toll plaza as one of the most accident-prone spots in the city. On Tuesday, team Hindustan Times visited these locations to know more about the problems faced by commuters on these spots.
At Magazine chowk, the commuters have witnessed that the road has not been widened as a result of which the stretch has become dangerous for commuters.
Satish Devkate, a frequent traveller on this road, said, "I travel daily from Magazine chowk and it is very difficult to commute on this road because of long traffic jams due to narrow road. During peak hours, the traffic moves very slowly. The width of the road is also not enough and it causes congestion. The road widening work may solve this problem. I take more than hour to reach my house."
“Recently, there has been no major accident at Magazine chowk. Road widening work has been going on since the last six months, which may reduce traffic jam on this stretch in the future. We have also called for a meeting regarding commuters safety,” said CV Kendre, Vishrantwadi API.
Devkate emphasised that the major reason for the growing traffic congestion on this road has been the rising number of vehicles because vehicles from Bhosari-Pune road and Alandi-Pune road converge at this chowk.
A resident of Bhosari, Swapnil Pawar, too shared similar views. “Vehicles enter this road from airport, and Yerwada adding to the number of vehicles already on this stretch. People do not follow traffic rules and hence, minor accidents occur on this road,” he said.
Moshi toll plaza road has many problems like lack of proper planning, over speeding vehicles and no speed brakers. “Moshi toll plaza road needs better planning as the number of vehicles plying on this road has been continuously rising. Also, vehicles have been seen over speeding on this road. There is no speed braker on the road except near toll plaza which is a problem, said Swapna Bhalerao, a frequent traveller.
“Many accidents on this road (Moshi toll plaza) used to take place because of over speeding. Also, these accidents happened at night. We cannot increase the number of speed brakers here because it is a highway. We have advised people to follow the speed limit,” said assistant police inspector Arun Ombas. Also, we have launched a campaign on how to prevent accidents, he added.
When contacted Arun Sabnis, chairman of Fulora Foundation, which works on road safety, said, “To avoid road accidents we have to improve community participation.Traffic policy should work on junction improvement plan. Improper speed brakers also cause many accidents on the highway.”
He advised that there is a need to reduce stress of the driver and install cameras to measure speed of vehicles to avoid over speeding incidents. People can be advised to not use lanes dedicated for buses to make the roads safer and reduce the commuting time.
