An actor and ardent theatre lover, Samantha Sirohi is known for her roles in ‘90s TV series Hip Hip Hurray as well as movies such as Dil Chahta Hai (2001) and Saathiya (2002). As a consultant, she has also worked behind the scenes to bring stage plays, stand-up comedy shows as well as music concerts to Pune.

Samantha is now working towards bringing more theatre and diverse performances to the city. “Aabracadabra (a theatre company) aims to create powerful and emotional experiences that engage audiences that engage audiences and drive them to discuss new ideas and adopt a broader world view. This came up because co-actors and friends from the city would often ask me about upcoming plays. I thought it was high time I took interest in it personally. Thus, Aabracadabra was formed,” says Samantha.

The theatre company is founded by Samantha Sirohi and entrepreneurs Rupal Sancheti and Katya Balasubramanian.

Rupal says, “Pune has always been an intellectually curious community. We believe that theatre can be an important tool for helping people build empathy and create change in our world. I grew up enjoying the Marathi theatre that runs in the veins of the city.”

For the past few years, each of them had lamented the limited number of English plays that were available for Pune audiences. Katya adds, “Each of grew up with an active cultural atmosphere, we missed having that in our lives at this point. And so we decided to do something about it and Aabracadabra was born.”
