A man named Vijay Namdev Gawale (45) was arrested for killing a man identified only as Anna Painter, in Rahatni, according to the police. Anna Painter, estimated to be in the age group of 35-40 years, was found murdered near a furniture shop close to Dhangar Baba temple, which falls under Wakad police jurisdiction, on Wednesday morning.

He was hit in the head with a concrete brick while drinking alcohol with the alleged killer, according to the latter’s confession to the police, said said Police Inspector Sunil Pinjan of Wakad police station. The incident was reported to the police control room and was passed on to Wakad police station around 9:30 am, said PI Pinjan. The arrest was made within six hours of the incident being reported.

Both the men were homeless, worked as contract labourers for painting work, and did not own mobile phones, according to the police. Gawale had left home 15 years ago and his parents, who live with his younger brother in Alandi, did not know his whereabouts, according to the police. A unit of police followed the possible locations, suggested by his relatives, where he could be found, the police said. The police later received information that a man matching Gawale’s descripotion was spotted near the Shivaji statue in Kalewadi, Rahatni. He was arrested by 4 pm as a result of the trap set by the city police, the police said.

The two men got into a scuffle while drinking when the deceased man threw the suspect’s food on the ground and started verbally abusing him, the police said. The behaviour riled the suspect and he allegedly hit the deceased man’s head with a concrete brick, according to the police.
